What is Open Charge Point Protocol (OCPP)?

OCPP is an open protocol between charging stations and a central charge point management system (CPMS). It allows any compliant charging station from any charge point manufacturer to connect to the network and for this reason has been chosen by Charge Your Car to create the UK’s first ‘open’ network, accessible by all charge point owners, all network operators, all charge point manufacturers and all drivers of plug-in electric vehicles.

OCPP started as an initiative for the 10,000 E-Laad charging stations in the Netherlands. It has now been adopted by several similar initiatives and charge point manufacturers in Austria, Belgium, China, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Great Britain, India, Ireland, Italy, Japan, Latvia, Lithuania, Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, Poland, Russia, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, Turkey, and the United States and has become the industry standard global platform.

Why adopt the Open Charge Point Protocol?

The UK has multiple regional networks of charge points in closed membership schemes which is delaying the adoption of electric vehicles in the UK. At the moment this is a barrier to drivers of plug-in electric vehicles being able to roam as they need to join multiple membership schemes, pay multiple subscriptions, and use multiple means of accessing the charge points. OCCP is the solution to this problem.
